Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis alongside therapeutic techniques to help you work with thoughts, habits, behaviours and responses that you'd like to change. Rather than simply trying to think your way out of an unwanted pattern, hypnotherapy gives you an opportunity to work with the automatic responses that can sit underneath it. My approach is personalised to you and the change you’ve decided to make.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of relaxed focused attention and heightened inner awareness. You experience similar states every day when you're deeply absorbed in a book, driving a familiar route, listening to music or becoming completely lost in your thoughts. During a hypnotherapy session, I deliberately guide you into a relaxed, focused state so we can work with your mind in a different way. And yes, you remain in control throughout..

Despite what movies and stage shows might have you believe, hypnosis isn't being unconscious or knocked out. You'll be aware of what's happening and able to communicate with me throughout the session. You don't hand over control of your mind to me. In fact, my approach is based on helping you become more aware of your own ability to create change..

You won't suddenly reveal all your secrets, speak another language or wake up wondering where the afternoon went. Hypnosis doesn't remove your ability to make choices. You remain aware and can accept, reject or question anything that comes up during a session.

Can someone make me do something against my will while I'm hypnotised?

Most people can experience hypnosis, although everyone experiences it differently. You don't need to be especially suggestible, imaginative or "good at hypnosis." The more willing you are to participate in the process and focus on the goal you're working towards, the more useful the experience is likely to be. Some cultures & people that spend time in meditate/prayer, can relax & drop down, inside their minds, more easily as they are familiar with the process of introspection.

There isn't one magic number. Some people come for one session focused on a specific goal. Others prefer a series of sessions to work on a more complex or long-standing pattern, repeat sessions test the results & add layers + learning.. I'll recommend an approach based on what you want to change rather than automatically signing you up for a lengthy program.

Typically the first session begins with a conversation. I'll ask questions about what you'd like to change, what's happening now and what you'd like to be different. We'll talk about how hypnosis works and answer any questions you have before we begin. Then I'll guide you through the hypnosis process and the techniques most appropriate for your goal. You remain involved throughout the session. There's no need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or how hypnosis is supposed to work.

There isn't one universal hypnosis feeling. Some people feel deeply relaxed. Others feel very focused, absorbed or simply notice that their attention has shifted. You may become aware of sounds around you, thoughts passing through your mind or sensations in your body. You don't have to "feel hypnotised" for the process to be useful.

You don't necessarily need to uncover the original cause of a habit or behaviour before you can begin changing it. Sometimes it's more useful to focus on what is happening now, what you want instead and how you'd like to respond differently. That's an important part of my approach.

You don't need to empty your mind or stop thinking. A busy mind is still a mind that can focus. Part of the process is learning to let thoughts come and go without needing to follow every one of them.

Hypnotherapy is generally considered safe when provided appropriately by a suitably trained practitioner. However, hypnotherapy isn't a substitute for medical or psychological care when that care is needed. If you have a medical or mental health condition, are taking medication or have concerns about whether hypnotherapy is suitable for you, please discuss this with your treating health professional.

I use a personalised, client-driven approach. That means I don't believe in simply giving everyone the same script because they're presenting with the same issue. Depending on your goal, I may incorporate hypnotherapy alongside techniques such as NLP, EFT, Havening, visualisation and other practical approaches.

You don't have to figure that out by yourself, that's exactly why I offer a Free Phone Call Consultation. It's a short, no-obligation conversation where you can tell me what you'd like to change, ask questions and find out whether I think I can help. If we're a good fit, we can then talk about booking your first session.

Yes, I offer online hypnotherapy sessions via Zoom as well as in-person sessions from my private studio in Smithfield, Cairns Northern Beaches. Online sessions can be a convenient option if you're unable to attend the studio or live further away. You’ll need a quiet private location, where you can relax, uninterrupted & focus. Headphones make it an even better online experience. These are done in Brisbane Australia (AEST).
